“What if?” can really haunt us. When we live with chronic illness, every day is full of surprises, and sometimes those surprises sideline our lives. It makes planning for our life ahead – in spite of chronic illness – very challenging. But I have a simple concept for you to consider today that I hope will help you get over the “what if” challenge and make plans anyway.
Everyone Has “What Ifs”
Here’s a revelation. You ready? Everyone – and I mean EVERYONE – has “what ifs” in their lives. People with huge amounts of money have “what ifs.” People who are broke face “what ifs.” Folks who are perfectly healthy have “what ifs” that keep them up at night. We ChronicBabes are not alone with feeling “what if?”
Over and over, I hear from women with illness who are afraid to plan, because they’re worried about “what if” this or that happens – and they consider it a trait of those with chronic illness. They often forget they’re not alone with this challenge.
Remembering that everyone worries about what may or may not happen in life can help us stay calm, and find the courage to plan.
Contingency Plans Rule
So once we’ve gotten over ourselves and realized we are SO not alone with “what if?” it’s time to think carefully about the logistics of planning. Every good planner has a contingency plan – an alternate path to follow in case plan #1 falls through.
I would love to own a house, for example. I love my home, a lot – I’m so thankful for it – but I also would love to not have upstairs neighbors, and I’d adore a garage, and a backyard for gardening… you get the picture.
I thought this would happen a couple years ago, but life got in the way, mostly in the form of illness that kept me from earning what I wanted. So the house is on hold. And that’s OK. My contingency plan is to keep making my current home cozy and beautiful, and to keep saving as much as I can, and to practice appreciation for what I DO have.
Another example: I’m traveling later this summer, and I sometimes get sick before or during vacations. I could easily let that “what if” creep into my brain and avoid travel, and I have in the past. But now I buy travel insurance – it’s my contingency plan. That way, if I have to cancel travel, I at least get my money back and it’s not a total loss.
Sometimes having a contingency plan is enough to calm me down and open my mind to all the GOOD possibilities, which is a beautiful thing.
These two examples are small-ish in nature, but you can apply the same principles to big decisions, like marriage, kids, moving, secondary education – don’t be afraid to think big! Just get that contingency plan in place.
Don’t let “what ifs” keep you from pursuing your dreams.
