Blog Carnival #42: The Winter Wellness and Fitness Edition

Hello ChronicBabes! It might be winter, but this year I'm fired up and determined not to let yucky weather temporarily sideline my healthy pursuits. I'm pulling out all the stops by publically sharing my weight loss and fitness goals and using every opportunity I can to build-in accountability into my program to ensure my success.

With my goal in mind, I decided to ask you: How are you approaching life differently this winter to prevent the blues, a sedentary lifestyle and the pull to just let your health priorities slide when it is cold, wet and gloomy outside?

Here are the responses that came into ChronicBabe HQ:

Winter Exercise Routines

Bummed you can't get outside to exercise? Well, Shruti lives with lupus, which means she needs to limit her exposure to sunlight regardless of the season, so she's got the indoor Exercise: Rain or Shine routine down. Her blog is Lifestyles of the Ill and (mostly) Blameless and she's @chr0nicbookworm on Twitter.

Katie of Overcoming Daily Battles loves yoga and has a great idea for motivating yourself to start and continue exercising. You'll want to incorporate it into your routine too, so head to her blog to read Beating the Winter Blues.

The sad truth is sometime chronic illness takes things away from us. Jennifer of Live Art.fully has ankylosing spondylitis and through Physical Therapy & Finding the Balance she learned that she can't continue to walk for exercise. She is coping by learning to exercise in new ways and by asking us to share with her our walking adventures.

Has exercise stumped you since you became a ChronicBabe? It's been difficult for Selena too, that is until she gained a new insight and began seeing exercise in a whole new light. Let her inspire you to try something new (and fun!) in My Discovery For Getting Fit with Dysautonomia & Fibromyalgia: Seated Exercise Videos over at Oh My Aches and Pains! She's tweeting as @SelenaMKI.

Phylor says she is beating the winter blahs by "walking to California one step at a time." Read about her exercise routine in steps to beat the winter blahs at  Phylorsblog: Chronic Pain, Life and All That.

Winter Wellness Strategies

In Surviving the Winter with Fibromyalgia, Wendy talks about the strategies she uses to cope with the challenges of the winter season, including the cold and dampness, shorter days and being cooped up inside all day. Check out her blog Transform Your Chronic Life and find her on Twitter as @kimmieCollas.

Winter is a mixed blessing for Ms. Rants—the colder weather helps her chronic illness symptoms but causest seasonal affective disorder. As she explains in Recoloring the winter blues, she's discovered exercise alternatives to outdoor walking but needs time outside in the sunshine whenever the weather permits.  Her blog is Chronic Rants and you can follow her as @CIRants on Twitter.

In the post Winter Months and Fibromyalgia over at Adventures in Chronic Illness you'll find a list of practical strategies you'll want to try in your battle to combat the winter blahs. Then leave a comment to add to the list.

Maria is making the transition from winters in Miami to winters in New Jersey and is sharing her what works for her in My 6 Tips for Surviving Winter with a Chronic Illness at her blog Going Down Swinging: A RSD/CRPS Blog. Check her out on Twitter where she is @HappyHealing44.

This winter Ellie of Bouncebackcafe.com is digging deeper and asking herself four important questions that she hopes will lead her to Happily Flourishing. Head over to her blog and find out if you should be asking yourself the same questions too.

Need a reminder of why those healthy choices you've been making are really that important? The Migrainista put together a list of documentaries that explain the science behind healthing eating and healing to help bolster your sagging motivation in Beating the Late January Slump.

Candice of Infectiously Optimistic is determined to get us all off on the right foot in 2012. In What To Eat When You Can't Eat Anything Series: Replacing Forbidden Favorites she rounds up recipes that are gluten-free, sugar-free and allergy-friendly, including alternatives to favorites like pizza and french fries. And in An Infectiously Optimistic Look Back at 2011 she shares all the health-related finds that helped her achieve wellness last year and will keep her going strong this year too.

Give us some feedback...

We love running our blog carnival! But maybe there's room for improvement, so we want to hear your suggestions. Let us know what you think of this edition in the discussion down below in our comments section.

...and join us next time!

Want to participate in the next blog carnival? Our next edition is scheduled for Monday, February 13, 2012, and in honor of Valentine's Day the theme of this edition is you are loved. So tell us about your awesome friends, your helpful co-workers, your steadfast family and/or furry companions.

If you want to participate, send us your name (as you would like it to appear), the name of your blog, the name of (and link to!) your post, and a 1-2 sentence description of the post. The deadline is Thursday, February 9 at 10pm CST.  *PLEASE NOTE THE NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINE DAY.*

P.S.: YAY! Special thanks to Selena, who is back!

She always works hard to help us compile an awesome blog carnival, and she's back after multiple hand surgeries...and making the carnival ROCK. Thanks, babelicious!
