Using mindful imagery to manage pain and stress - #HAWMC Day 17
by Jenni Prokopy, the Editrix
On the 17th day of the WEGO Health (they're @wegohealth on Twitter) Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge (HAWMC)*, in which they offer a blog prompt per day for a month, organizers have asked us to do something mindful and describe something peaceful with as much imagery as possible. Awesome! I love mindfulness practice, it's something I've studied for a while now and is really helpful in my pain and anxiety management.
In fact, the National Pain Foundation has written about mindfulness as a stress reduction technique, and this MSN article on mindfulness meditation for fibromyalgia management is pretty interesting.
One of the most peaceful images I can imagine is reclining on a favorite couch, upholstered in squishy green fabric, curled up under a couple of worn blankets that are soft with age and wrapped around me like a nest. There's a quiet fire burning in the fireplace beside me, and outside the sun is going down; there's still some light in the sky, and it's not too cold out, just cold enough that I want a fire and some extra warmth.
Speaking of extra warmth, I'm enjoying a couple fingers of really good bourbon, with one cube of ice, in a pretty glass. Underneath the blankets, my feet are covered in soft, fuzzy pink socks. The book I'm reading is engrossing and as the light grows dim outside, I turn up the lamp over my shoulder. I'm warm, relaxed, cozy and safe.
And.....now I'm ready to get off the computer and go do this. See ya!

*All month you'll see me reference #HAWMC as a hashtag in my headlines; that's so when I write about it, my references show up properly in Twitter and folks can find my Tweets. That's technology, folks!
