These are a few of our favorite things...for gettin' sexy
by Jenni Prokopy
Admit it: There are times you don't feel super-sexy. Sometimes I don't either. Who can blame us, with chronic illness interrupting our days and nights with its yucky symptoms?
I don't think it's possible to feel like a sex kitten every single day, but there are a few things you can do to boost your vibe. No matter how sick you are, there is ALWAYS something you can do to feel more Babe than Chronic.
Eat better
You are what you eat, and if you're eating donuts every day for breakfast, then your body is probably not thrilled with you. This is not an anti-fat suggestion, but it IS an admonition to put some thought into your dietary habits. As I write this, I'm eating a bunch of grapes; sure, I would love to be eating a cheese danish instead, but I put these grapes out for a reason—so I would have a healthy snack choice.
When you eat healthier meals and snacks, your body not only functions better...you also feel more positive about your decisions. And you might lose a few pounds, which may help alleviate some symptoms (and help you squeeze into those favorite jeans that languish in the back of your closet). Trust me on this, Babes!
One of my favorite meal planning tools is the Cooking Light series of cookbooks. Their annual collections are full of fantastic, easy-to-prepare recipes for everything under the sun.
Wear sexy undies
This one's a gimme. Just because you feel crappy doesn't mean you can't wear something sexy. Sometimes just putting on a favorite bra or panties can make you feel a little more frisky. And they don't even have to be undies for someone else's benefit—this is for YOU.
Without getting TOO personal, let's just say I've heard good things about Hanky Panky undies. I hear they're quite comfortable (even the thongs!) and very well-made. And it's my understanding that they come in a wildly huge range of colors and are totally worth the price. Am I making myself clear, ladies?
Take good care of your skin (and hair, and nails)
This year's flu season has been ever-long, and my hands are paying the price...because I wash them a bazillion times a day. The result: my hands look older, more wrinkly, and very dry. Totally not hot! Maybe you don't think this is much of an issue, but I'm self-conscious about it.
I asked around and found a hand cream that's alleviating the issue: Burt's Bees Shea Butter Hand Repair Creme. A couple applications a day (you only need a tiny bit) are bringing my hands back to their younger state. Whew! I feel better already. And when I touch someone else, they won't think a longshoreman is grabbing them.
Of course, I realize we don't have total control over our skin. Some of you might even have skin conditions that make you particular about care. So take this idea and apply it somewhere else: use a really nice shampoo and conditioner on your hair, or treat yourself to a nice pedicure or manicure. Whatever you do, find a way to care for yourself, one that makes you feel pretty. Even a little goes a long way.
Get some culture...and get creative
It's not just men who get, um, excited when they see sexy images. Women do, too—and they also respond positively to different kinds of cultural influences. If you're feeling less than super-sexy, you might try reading some stimulating literature (we like the Susie Bright-edited Best American Erotica story series). Heck, even the sickest Babes can prop a book on a pillow and read, right?
Maybe you have a list of favorite romantic movies that can get you in the mood, or try creating a "sexy" playlist for your MP3 player. There are so many options!
The point is this: Sometimes we get caught in a rut, feel bored—or perhaps we're so focused on our illness stuff that we've forgotten how to appreciate our bodies on a more sensual, pleasurable level—and seeing images, reading stories or listening to music can help us feel get more in tune with ourselves and inspire some creative sexy action.
Love yourself!
It's common for people with chronic illness to lose sight of themselves as sexual beings, understandably. I have at times, and you probably have, too. But all is not lost! I hope these few ideas get you on the path toward feeling like a hot mama again...and don't forget, we have a whole host of Chronically Sexy articles chock full of ideas.
Much love, Jenni
