Happy Type 1 Diabetes Day!
We know, not the most uplifting headline. But there are TONS of people who live well in spite of type 1 diabetes and today's a great day for you to learn how they do it, and more. Kerri Morrone of Six Until Me sent us these ideas about how to "celebrate" the day:
from Kerri Morrone of Six Until Me:
What do you wish people knew about the condition you, or your child, lives with every day? On April 14, 2008, the diabetes community is encouraged to Raise Your Voice for type 1 diabetes awareness! What can you do? Write about your most challenging diabetes moment and how you handled it. How about when you first explained diabetes to your date/ co-worker/ client/ inquisitive family member? When people ask you "Ah, you use insulin...you must have it really bad," how do you respond? Help your friends and family understand how living with type 1 diabetes has affected your life and what they can do to help the progress towards a cure. Raise your voice!
Check out Kerri's thoughts on the day, and consider her blog a terrific resource on the topic.
Amy Tenderich of Diabetes Mine:
Another one of our favorite blogs on this topic is Diabetes Mine, run by Amy Tenderich. Today she talks about Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) (hey, she's teaching the Editrix a new term today!) and her diagnosis experience. She's gathered a batch of terrific resources on causal theories, treatment, complications, finding a new way of life and embracing a new community.
And beyond her coverage of today's activities, her site is a wealth of resources. Take some time to get to know her and you'll learn a ton!
Other resources:
Here at ChronicBabe, we've got some favorite resources on diabetes over at the Help Desk.
Diabetes O.C. (online community) is a super-popular way to connect with others who live with the condition.
Another terrific community is Tu Diabetes, which boasts lots of interaction, videos, surveys and more. (There are tons of articles there on Type 1 Diabetes Day.)
And of course, dLife is a fantastic resource with information to keep you busy for days.
There are thousands of sites, and dozens we love, but these are some of the best and readers' favorites, just to get you started.
