Bliss? I got your bliss right here!
By Jenni Prokopy, the Editrix
So here I am, venting. Just getting started. I wasn't sure about including a personal blog on Chronicbabe.com, but the arrival of the damn Bliss catalog made the decision for me.
I get a lot of catalogs, and while I love to flip through them and look at the pretty pictures, I'm not much of a catalog shopper, so most of them get trashed. The Bliss catalog looks super cute, so I spent a little time looking through it. And boy, did it piss me off!
At first, I thought it was just a garden variety beauty products/clothing/jewelry catalog. But then I focused in on a few prices. $325 for 1.7 oz. of something called "Miracle Broth" for skin. $55 for 1.3 oz. of sunscreen. $105 for a tank top with a built-in necklace. (Here's an idea: try wearing a regular tank top and a regular necklace. Seriously, it works!) There's even a product called fatgirlslim that claimes to make your skin skinny--with the wonderful power of caffeine. Ew.
The icing on this expensive cake: a $645 comb. With a laser. Yes, a laser. Put on your best Dr. Evil voice and say it with me: it's a comb with a frickin' laser.
Seriously, people. Is it not enough that every day, women are bombarded with thousands of images that tell us we're imperfect? And for those of us who are Chronic, we have the added frustrations of trying to look and feel beautiful when parts of us are just not cooperating. We don't need all this and a comb with a laser. That $645 is just a little shy of what I spent to get my car fixed today. So I'll just use a regular comb, thanks.
Maybe you're a Bliss catalog fan - fine. But I hope you'll consider, just for a moment, what that money could buy you instead. A weekend getaway? A night out with the girls? A cute vibrator? Sushi? Or maybe, like me, brake pads and a transmission flush? Just think about it.
