A reader asks: Could fibromyalgia be caused by viral infections?

A reader asks:
Has anyone heard about fibromyalgia being attributed to viral infections?
The Babe responds:
I went to a nutritionist who suggested that I take Monolaurin, an extract of coconut which is supposed to be a natural antiviral. She also showed me an article about Dr. David Johnson in Indiana who is testing women with chronic pain problems (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc…) for a series of 17 viruses -- and finding that most fibromyalgia sufferers are positive for between three and nine of the 17!
He is treating with antiviral meds, and according to the article, getting very good results. I'm not really sure if this is true for most (or all) of women with fibromyalgia, since I haven’t experienced it myself yet, but I am definitely planning on asking my doctor for more information.
